The 1Floor Project: An Experiment in Social Dancing
One Song. One Floor. Infinite Dances.

💬 The 1Floor Project F.A.Q. 💬

What exactly is "Social Dancing Lessons for All Levels" and The 1Floor Project?
The "Social Dancing Lessons for All Levels" is a weekly class and ongoing experiment in social dancing. Each session explores what happens when two dancers—perhaps trained in completely different styles—step onto the floor and try to create a dance together without preset steps or choreography. It’s improvisational. It’s musical. And it’s built around rhythm, listening, and mutual respect. And that's what the 1Floor Project is all about:  One Song. One Floor. Infinite Dances.

Is this a class for beginners or experienced dancers?
Both! If you're brand new to dancing, you’ll gain the foundational tools to move with confidence, even when the music is unfamiliar. If you're an experienced dancer, you'll discover how to adapt your skills across styles and truly listen to your partner. Whether you have two left feet or twenty years of tango, there's room for you on this floor.

What kind of dancing will we be doing?
That’s the beauty of it, we don’t limit ourselves to just one style. The music might swing, sway, groove, or glide. You’ll learn to respond to rhythms from swing, Latin, R&B, pop, funk, world, and more. Our job isn’t to teach you a dance, it’s to teach you how to dance with anyone, to anything (well, almost...).

Do I need a partner?
Not at all. We rotate partners often, so you’ll dance with many people throughout the night. This helps you build flexibility, awareness, and comfort—skills that are essential to social dancing. Of course, if you do come with a partner, you're welcome to stay together as much or as little as you like.

What if I’ve only danced in one style—will I be lost?
Not at all, friend. In fact, that's exactly the kind of dancer this project is for. If you’re a Salsero, a Tanguera, or a Lindy Hopper—we’ll take the rhythm you know and show you how to translate it across unfamiliar music and unfamiliar partners. You'll still be you—but with more tools in your toolbox.

What makes this different from a regular dance class?
Most partner dance classes teach steps. We teach decisions. Each class gives you a musical environment, a partner, and a set of guiding principles (what we call RAFTS—Rhythm, Accent, Frame, Travel, Shape). From there, it's up to you to create a dance. It’s not about perfection, it’s about discovery.

What should I wear or bring?
Wear clothes you find comfortable to wear (in public) and to move around in. Some of our dancers will show up in workout clothes, some in full suit-and-tie. For your first few lessons, wear shoes you are comfortable moving around in - though footwear that is lightweight and with smooth soles tend to make new movement easier. Also, feel free to bring water and a towel, and of course, your curiosity, and an open mind. That’s all you need.

Who’s teaching this, anyway?
That would be me—Nick Peterson, better known as Professor Jitterbug. I’ve been teaching swing and social dances for over 26 years, and I created this class & The 1Floor Project to help dancers break out of their stylistic bubbles and discover the full potential of partner dancing.

Can I just drop in, or do I need to register?
Just drop in! We meet every Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at Latin Blendz Dance Academy. No pre-registration needed.
$20/week or $60/month.
Still have questions?
