The 1Floor Project
An Experiment in Social Dancing

Two Partners. One Rhythm. No Assumptions.
Any Dancer. Any Rhythm. 1Floor.

Social dancing is improvisational lead-follow partner dancing to a rhythm. Every social dance form is a collection of rhythms, accents, patterns, and assumptions.

Often, we identify ourselves by style: Salsero. Tanguera. Lindy Hopper.
We attend events with names likeWest Coast Swing Night, Zouk Congress, or Latin Fridays

But regardless of where we learned - be it a ballroom studio or a street corner - social dancers share two things:

  1. A love of dancing to rhythm

  2. A love of dancing to rhythm with a partner

The Experiment

What can two partners create when their foundations come from different—perhaps even opposite—rhythms, accents, patterns, and assumptions?

What if the only thing we had to begin was the rhythm of the song playing right now?
What if all we had was that song—and each other; and everything else was respectfully negotiated: style, space, lead, follow?

Will we discover what truly matters in making a meaningful partnership in the three or four minutes we share on the dance floor?

What art do we create when no one tells us how art should look?

Where does our dance go when there is no one to tell us how the dance should be?

Will this work?
I truly don’t know.
But I’m excited to find out.

I’ll meet you on the dance floor.

💬 The 1Floor Project F.A.Q. 💬

What exactly is The 1Floor Project?

The 1Floor Project is a weekly class and ongoing experiment in social dancing. Each session explores what happens when two dancers—perhaps trained in completely different styles—step onto the floor and try to create a dance together without preset steps or choreography. It’s improvisational. It’s musical. And it’s built around rhythm, listening, and mutual respect.

Is this a class for beginners or experienced dancers?

Both! If you're brand new to dancing, you’ll gain the foundational tools to move with confidence, even when the music is unfamiliar. If you're an experienced dancer, you'll discover how to adapt your skills across styles and truly listen to your partner. Whether you have two left feet or twenty years of tango, there's room for you on this floor.

What kind of dancing will we be doing?

That’s the beauty of it—we don’t limit ourselves to just one style. The music might swing, sway, groove, or glide. You’ll learn to respond to rhythms from swing, Latin, R&B, pop, funk, and more. Our job isn’t to teach you a dance—it’s to teach you how to dance with anyone, to anything.

Do I need a partner?

Not at all. We rotate partners often, so you’ll dance with many people throughout the night. This helps you build flexibility, awareness, and comfort—skills that are essential to social dancing. Of course, if you do come with a partner, you're welcome to stay together as much or as little as you like.

What if I’ve only danced in one style—will I be lost?

Not at all, friend. In fact, that's exactly the kind of dancer this project is for. If you’re a Salsero, a Tanguera, or a Lindy Hopper—we’ll take the rhythm you know and show you how to translate it across unfamiliar music and unfamiliar partners. You'll still be you—but with more tools in your toolbox.

What makes this different from a regular dance class?

Most classes teach steps. We teach decisions. Each class gives you a musical environment, a partner, and a set of guiding principles (what I call RAFTS—Rhythm, Accent, Frame, Travel, Shape). From there, it's up to you to create a dance. It’s not about perfection—it’s about discovery.

What should I wear or bring?

Wear something you can move in and shoes that won’t stick to the floor. Bring water, your curiosity, and an open mind. That’s all you need.

Who’s teaching this, anyway?

That would be me—Nick Peterson, better known as Professor Jitterbug. I’ve been teaching swing and social dances for over 26 years, and I created The 1Floor Project to help dancers break out of their stylistic bubbles and discover the full potential of partner dancing.

Can I just drop in, or do I need to register?

Just drop in! We meet every Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at Latin Blendz Dance Academy. No pre-registration needed.

$20/week or $60/month.
